Coffee and exercise — can it improve your workout?

Have you planned exercise today? Is a demanding endurance or aerobic workout ahead? Before starting, consider a cup of coffee. Most people know a nutritious meal matters after exercise, but not everyone knows that coffee beforehand may offer benefits for the workout itself. What kind of benefits? Read on.

Coffee and increased calorie burning

Can drinking coffee before exercise help burn more fat? It is one of the benefits often discussed. Research published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism reported approximately 15% greater calorie expenditure among athletes who consumed coffee before exercise compared with those who did not.

Caffeine is central to the discussion. It can increase metabolic rate and thus energy expenditure during the day. A higher energy expenditure can allow a little more dietary flexibility while maintaining a calorie deficit. Occasional foods such as pizza or chocolate need not undo progress when the overall balance is maintained. Freshly roasted coffee can therefore be an appealing part of a routine.

Could coffee support exercise performance?

A cup of good-quality coffee before exercise can influence performance. Caffeine is a stimulant acting on the central nervous system, with effects on alertness and the cardiovascular system. This can help mobilise mind and body for a demanding workout.

It may improve tolerance of fatigue, weakness and perceived muscle discomfort, helping you complete more repetitions. In short, pre-workout coffee is associated with more energy and motivation.

More focus on the exercises

Caffeine does more than stimulate: it can improve concentration. During physical training, that means greater attention to each exercise. Correct technique and precision are essential, and focusing on a movement helps you perform it effectively.

Good technique is also important for safety. Better concentration may help reduce mistakes caused by distraction, supporting a more controlled workout rather than careless movements.

Which coffee should you choose before exercise?

For this routine, we favour naturally brewed coffee rather than instant. Consider caffeine content, which differs between coffees. Light roasts are often associated with a stronger caffeine character, while dark roasts are commonly described as having less.

What about milk, whether dairy or plant-based? Milk changes the drinking experience and supplies nutrients, including calcium in dairy and some fortified alternatives. Discussions of coffee often raise questions about milk, caffeine and calcium balance. Explore the subject in Which milk should you choose for coffee?

Milk is not the only option. You can also try honey, ginger, cinnamon or turmeric. We develop this topic in Three healthy additions to coffee.

How long before a workout should you drink coffee?

For a morning workout, a commonly suggested interval is around 30 minutes before exercise. If you train after work, in the afternoon or evening, remember that caffeine can remain active for around six hours. Coffee too late in the day may make it harder to fall asleep or affect sleep quality.

This is not an inflexible rule: individual caffeine tolerance, age and body weight all matter. Read more about mindful timing in When should you drink coffee? Choose your timing consciously.
