Three wholesome coffee additions — what to try in your cup

Do you drink your coffee the same way every day? How about a new flavour and a fresh take on your daily cup? Combine pleasure with useful ingredients by serving yourself and your loved ones coffee with a few carefully chosen additions. If sugar and flavoured syrups are the only extras you know, it is time to explore some alternatives.

Idea one: coffee with cinnamon

Cinnamon, made from the bark of cinnamon trees, is one of the world's most recognisable spices. Ceylon cinnamon is a particularly well-known type. Its distinctive, slightly spicy flavour pairs beautifully with coffee. That warming character makes cinnamon coffee a favourite in autumn and winter, but there is no reason to reserve it for colder days.

Why take an interest in this spice? Cinnamon contains compounds studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Research has also examined its possible relationship with blood sugar and cholesterol. These topics help explain its reputation, but a sprinkle in coffee should not be regarded as protection against infections, cancer, diabetes or rheumatic disease.

It is sometimes described as an ally in weight management because of claims about metabolism, but it cannot replace a balanced diet. Paired with coffee, its lively aroma can make an energising cup especially enjoyable when you feel tired or sleepy.

Idea two: coffee with ginger

Like cinnamon, ginger is no longer limited to baking or the familiar warming drink enjoyed during cold season. It also makes an appealing addition to coffee, with a character all its own.

Ginger coffee is often discussed in connection with metabolism and weight management. Ginger compounds have been studied for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which is one reason the spice is popular in colder months. Traditional uses also include relief of certain digestive symptoms and headaches, but drinking ginger coffee is not a proven treatment for flu, colds or migraines, nor a guaranteed way to improve brain circulation or memory.

Could it be a pleasant way to start your day? An espresso or classic black coffee with a pinch of dried ginger adds a distinctive twist. The caffeine can help you feel more alert and focused, while the spice brings its own warming flavour. That sounds worth trying.

Idea three: coffee with turmeric

Do you know that intense yellow-gold spice? Have you ever tried a turmeric latte? This aromatic ingredient is often called a “super spice” and deserves a place on our list of interesting coffee additions.

Alongside its flavour and aroma, turmeric contains curcumin, a compound widely researched for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Laboratory studies have also explored antimicrobial and anticancer mechanisms, but those findings do not mean that a turmeric coffee prevents or treats cancer or other diseases.

Turmeric's traditional reputation extends to digestion, liver function, the nervous system, heart health, skin complaints and general wellbeing. It is also discussed in relation to allergies and body weight. These are areas of interest, not a list of guaranteed medicinal effects from a culinary serving.

It is easy to see why turmeric is sometimes called the “spice of life”. Try adding a little to your coffee if you enjoy the taste. A small amount of black pepper is often paired with it because piperine can increase curcumin absorption. Use spices as food rather than as a substitute for medical care.

A final point: find a good coffee shop

Do you love coffee? So do we. Many people drink it every day, but not everyone considers its quality or stores it properly. Before adding anything to your cup, take a closer look at the coffee itself and how you keep it. We explain more in “Where to store coffee to keep its flavour for longer”.

Before reaching for cinnamon, ginger or turmeric, make sure you have good-quality coffee from a trusted coffee shop. Quality beans and suitable storage determine much of the final flavour and aroma. Get those foundations right, then enjoy experimenting.
