Increasingly in the spotlight — the secrets of organic coffee

Organic coffee is attracting more and more attention. This is hardly surprising: environmental awareness in Poland continues to grow, which is undoubtedly a positive development. Products labelled “organic” need little introduction today, and their quality appeals to health-conscious consumers. What can we expect from certified organic coffee? Let us find out.
What is organic coffee?
Like other organic products, organic coffee must meet strict standards. In particular, cultivation avoids synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilisers. This is an appealing prospect for anyone who values high-quality products.
Moving away from those chemicals must be a genuine, planned commitment by the grower. To obtain certification, the land intended for organic coffee must demonstrate a conversion period — described here as at least three years without prohibited chemical treatments. Growers must also protect the product throughout cultivation, processing, packaging and transport, keeping it separate from other goods to avoid potential contamination. Organic certification also involves meticulous records and frequent quality inspections.
Applying for and obtaining certification is demanding and expensive. For that reason, some growers do not seek an official organic label, even though they remain committed to quality and produce excellent specialty coffees. Our shop offers two examples from this segment: Costa Rica Turrialba and Kenya Nyeri whole-bean coffees.
Where does organic coffee grow?
Peru is a leading organic-coffee producer, followed by Mexico and Ethiopia. These countries offer ideal conditions for naturally grown coffee. As we know, the conditions in which coffee matures help shape its distinctive flavour and aroma.
Organic farms are often shaded by large trees, sheltering delicate coffee plants from the burning sun. In this setting, plants can mature at their own natural, undisturbed pace.
What does organic coffee taste like?
When buying whole-bean or ground coffee, flavour and aroma are usually our first considerations. Organic coffee can offer something out of the ordinary. This reflects not only the absence of artificial fertilisers and synthetic crop-protection chemicals, but also unhurried bean development, hand harvesting, sun drying and careful processing in trusted mills and roasteries. Its distinctive taste and aroma are the result of many factors working together.

Natural coffee — its associated properties
Beyond its excellent flavour and aroma, organic 100% Arabica coffee is valued for its health-related properties, particularly antioxidant activity. Regular coffee consumption has been associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Organic coffee is also appreciated for supporting metabolism and fat burning.
Other commonly discussed benefits concern circulation, the body's oxygen supply, and support for heart and liver function. A cup of black coffee can be a welcome mood-lifter, associated with serotonin and dopamine, often called the “happiness hormones”. Its B vitamins are also linked with support during stress.
Organic coffee is more than a passing trend. It responds to the needs of modern consumers who make increasingly conscious purchasing decisions. Does that describe you?
