Costa Rica coffee — November 2020 coffee-of-the-month promotion

Many people consider Costa Rican coffee among the finest in the world. In November 2020, Costa Rica SHB was the coffee of the month at the Blueberry Roasters online shop, with a generous discount. Before presenting the special voucher, let us explore this coffee. How is it grown in this part of the world? What creates its distinctive flavour and aroma? What does SHB mean? Discover the answers and more.

Costa Rican coffee — where did it begin?

Costa Rica lies in Central America, where coffee arrived towards the end of the eighteenth century. During the nineteenth century, the authorities encouraged local people to grow coffee by offering them land. The industry developed rapidly as a result.

Coffee growing and trade still play an important part in the country's economy and competitiveness. They have also helped shape its cultural and social landscape.

Conditions that favour coffee growing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers excellent conditions for growing coffee. Fertile volcanic soils and high humidity help create a favourable environment. Harvesting is traditionally carried out by hand, while mechanical harvesters are much less common. Careful picking allows ripe cherries to be selected for the next stage: processing.

Costa Rican growers devote considerable attention to cultivation and bean quality. The country's coffee institute also plays a role, carrying out research and scientific testing that inform production standards and improvements. The aim is consistently high quality.

Costa Rica is especially associated with Arabica. The country historically restricted Robusta cultivation as part of its focus on quality, tradition and reputation. That strong Arabica identity has helped establish Costa Rica as an important coffee origin.

Costa Rica SHB — what does the abbreviation mean?

You will often see Costa Rican coffee labelled SHB. It may look like a code that is easy to ignore while shopping, but it is useful to know what it means.

SHB stands for Strictly Hard Bean and indicates high-grown coffee with dense beans. In the high-altitude growing areas discussed here, plantations can lie around 1,500–2,000 metres above sea level. The quality of the exported beans demonstrates how well these conditions can suit excellent coffee.

What does Costa Rican coffee taste like?

Our Costa Rica SHB is described as mild and balanced, with dark chocolate and toasted almond notes, low acidity and an inviting clove-like aroma.

If you would like to try a distinguished coffee origin, choose Costa Rica SHB from Blueberry Roasters. We believe every coffee lover should taste it, prepare it in their favourite way and form their own opinion.
