How to make delicious vanilla coffee

Flavoured coffees are becoming increasingly popular. It is easy to see why: a favourite aroma can be a lovely companion to good coffee. Vanilla is one of the most familiar choices. How can you prepare it, and how does a flavoured-bean coffee differ from one made with real vanilla?
Vanilla brings to mind comfort: a warm kitchen, a cake baking and a moment of peace. It is hardly surprising that vanilla coffee has so many admirers. There are three basic ways to make it.
1. Brew vanilla-flavoured beans
The simplest option is to grind and brew beans that have already been treated with food-grade vanilla flavouring. Check that your equipment is suitable for flavoured or coated beans.
For enthusiasts who want to appreciate the beans' original character, this may not be the first choice. Added flavouring deliberately changes the aromatic profile, and the quality of both the coffee and flavouring matters.
2. Add vanilla syrup
Brew black coffee or espresso from a variety or blend you enjoy, then add vanilla syrup. Milk and sugar are optional; remember that the syrup already brings sweetness.
This approach lets you begin with good-quality coffee and adjust the flavour yourself. Depending on the product and amount, the vanilla note can be quite sweet and intense.
3. Use real vanilla
Our favourite approach is to prepare black coffee and add hot milk infused with real vanilla. A vanilla pod lends a delicate, fragrant flavour that complements rather than dominates the drink.
The result is an inviting, gently flavoured coffee — a simple pleasure worth trying.
