Develop a taste for flavoured coffee

For many of us, a mug or cup of strong, aromatic coffee is an essential part of every morning. We value the black drink for its stimulating effect, but flavour and aroma matter just as much. Those qualities, together with the desire for new coffee experiences, are probably the main reasons more people are choosing flavoured coffees. Let us take a closer look.

How is flavoured coffee made?

The process begins with choosing suitable beans. Arabica is the preferred base because its flavour is more balanced and delicate than Robusta's. Bean quality is, of course, essential: the Arabica used for flavoured coffee should be of the highest quality.

Where do its distinctive qualities come from? The beans are treated with aromatic oils. Flavouring takes place during production, when their capacity to absorb different substances is particularly useful. The beans are then cooled, allowing the added aroma to penetrate their structure. Applying flavour carefully at this stage helps create a brewed coffee with a distinctive, intense taste and fragrance.

It is also worth considering the type of flavouring. Producers may use artificial or natural aromas, with artificial ones commonly used. If this matters to you, check exactly what the producer or roastery adds. Does a raspberry-flavoured coffee contain a natural fruit extract, or a substance imitating its aroma?

How should flavoured coffee be prepared?

Brewing it is essentially no different from brewing your usual coffee. Remember, however, that the richest flavour and aroma come from whole-bean flavoured coffee. Why not pre-ground? Grinding breaks beans into small particles and speeds up the loss of precious flavour and aroma. Choose whole beans and grind them just before brewing. If you do not have a grinder, explore our shop's range.

Correct storage also helps preserve its distinctive qualities. Read more in Where should you store coffee to enjoy its flavour for longer?

An intriguing flavour in your cup

Producers are expanding their flavoured-coffee selections with increasing confidence, and it is easy to see why. A wide range of unusual flavours makes us curious about the combinations — and they really can surprise us.

Our roastery offers ten distinctive flavours: chocolate, brandy orange, banana, rum, advocaat, Irish whisky, raspberry, coconut, Bourbon vanilla and fudge. Has one caught your interest? Try it!

You do not need to buy a large kilogram pack to discover the taste. Our flavoured coffees are available in 100 g or 250 g packs, so you can explore without spending money on a large quantity that may not meet your expectations. A smaller pack lets you decide whether it will join your favourite drinks.
