Coffee trends you should know — part 2

In the second part of our guide to coffee trends, we share another collection of discoveries every coffee enthusiast should know. Curious about developments in the coffee world and the habits that shaped the market in 2020? Let us explore.

Vietnamese egg coffee

Read that twice? Wondering whether the heading is a mistake and we meant bulletproof coffee with butter and MCT oil? No: we really are talking about Vietnamese coffee with egg.

The internet and travel open doors to traditions, customs and recipes from distant places. Vietnamese egg coffee reached us through those same opportunities. In Vietnam, it is a familiar way to enjoy coffee, served not only hot but cold too. Can you believe it?

A Vietnamese coffee recipe

To discover its taste, follow these steps:

  1. Brew coffee in a moka pot or prepare a classic espresso.
  2. In a bowl, combine one egg yolk with two tablespoons of condensed milk. Optionally add one teaspoon of vanilla sugar. Beat for around three minutes, until creamy, smooth and pale yellow.
  3. Spoon the egg cream into a mug or cup, then pour in the coffee and stir.

Enjoy!

Latte art — painting on coffee

You visit a favourite café, order a milk coffee and smile when it arrives with an impressive pattern on top. Out comes the phone for a photograph to share. We all love patterns on coffee!

These miniature artworks are latte art, a skill every barista should develop. Free pouring and etching require practice, patience, precision and confidence, as well as correctly textured milk and suitable accessories.

Early patterns often centred on simple hearts and rosettas. As the art grew and baristas refined their skills, swans, tulips, butterflies and leaves appeared. Today, almost any ornament can inspire a design.

Dedicated classes are available to beginners and home baristas alike. Perhaps it is time to put aside ready-made stencils and move to the next level?
