Coffee in Honduras — an unpromising beginning

The story of coffee's beginnings in Honduras is fairly short. Local people knew coffee cherries from the early nineteenth century, but did not attempt large-scale cultivation for decades. A pity, you might say, because the country always had an excellent climate for coffee. That was not the only obstacle: infrastructure was weak too. Transport problems long prevented competition with other Central American producers, so production was limited to domestic needs.

The situation changed dramatically in the mid-twentieth century, when the United States offered substantial support for Honduran coffee production. This provided the impetus for distribution to foreign markets.

Honduras — now one of the world's leading coffee producers

Honduras travelled a long, difficult road to become one of the world's leading coffee producers. Today, it proudly ranks among the top ten, something its beginnings hardly suggested. Coffee is one of its most important exports and played a vital economic role after Hurricane Mitch caused enormous damage.

The country now impresses with both the quantity and the quality of its coffee.

Honduran coffee — favourable growing conditions

Honduras has ideal natural conditions: fertile soils, uplands, mountains and a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity. Banana plants growing near the coffee provide shade from strong sun. This is a solid foundation for high-quality Arabica. The main botanical varieties are Caturra, Typica, Bourbon and Catuai.

Coffee grows at elevations between 1,100 and 2,000 metres. The best grows at 1,500–2,000 metres, earning the designation SHG, Strictly High Grown. The abbreviation is associated here with clean growing environments, away from fungi and pests, and natural fertilisers rather than pesticides. These beans are therefore often described as ecological or organic. You can find them here.

High elevations offer another quality advantage. Beans ripen more slowly, gradually taking up nutrients and minerals from fertile mountain soils and developing a unique, full and pronounced flavour.

Most Honduran coffee is wet-processed, then dried in the sun.
