A true coffee lover’s essentials

For a true coffee enthusiast, an aromatic cup is essential not only in the morning but throughout the day. Whether whole-bean or ground, the coffee must be high quality. A pack from the nearest grocery shop or supermarket does not always meet an enthusiast's expectations. But what about brewing accessories? What belongs in a coffee lover's home? Let us find out.

What makes good-quality coffee?

Freshly roasted beans are a must-have in any coffee lover's cupboard. Your choice influences the drink's flavour, aroma and strength. As you probably know, grinding the beans just before brewing helps preserve their character. But which coffee should you choose?

Arabica or Robusta? These two species dominate the market, and their flavour differences are noticeable to most drinkers, especially experienced enthusiasts. Arabica is generally milder and often has sweet notes. Robusta tends to be stronger, sharper and more bitter or astringent. Its higher caffeine content also gives it a more pronounced stimulating effect.

Which coffee grinder should you choose?

To get the most from the coffee you choose, grind it shortly before brewing. A grinder is therefore a worthwhile addition to your setup.

You will find both manual and electric grinders. Electric models are convenient, while a traditional hand grinder offers a slower, hands-on approach. A good manual burr grinder can produce an even grind with little heat, helping you make a fragrant cup.

If you enjoy a traditional routine, consider a manual burr grinder. Quality matters more than the power source alone: a well-designed electric burr grinder can also perform very well. Choose one that provides a consistent grind suitable for your brewing method.

The moka pot — coffee with an Italian café character

As a coffee enthusiast, you may have tried several brewing methods in search of your favourite flavour. Have you used a classic Italian moka pot? Its rich, satisfying coffee can make a larger espresso machine feel unnecessary for your needs.

A Bialetti moka pot is one useful option for gas or appropriate electric hobs; choose a specifically compatible model if you use induction. Alongside an AeroPress or a coffee machine, a moka pot is a pressure-based brewer well worth considering for your collection.

A milk frother — for a creamy layer of foam

Even if you usually prefer strong black coffee, you might occasionally fancy a caffè latte or latte macchiato. An espresso machine may already have a steam wand or integrated frother, but what if you do not own one?

A separate milk frother can help you create a pleasing layer of foam. Manual and electric models are available. Your choice depends on the results you expect and the amount you want to spend. At the time of the original article, entry-level options started at around PLN 25.

Coffee cups and glasses — presentation matters

Would you agree that coffee can be even more enjoyable in the right vessel? Everyone has their habits, but it is useful to know the basic serving conventions.

For black coffee or coffee with milk, choose a classic mug or cup. Serve cappuccino in a generous cup with a saucer. A tall glass, preferably with a handle, works well for a latte. Espresso belongs in a small cup or demitasse suited to its short serving size.

Alongside your home collection, leave room for a practical reusable travel cup, such as a Huskee cup made using coffee husks. It is useful for coffee outside the home: in the car, at work, at school, on a walk or on a trip. Choose a lid and construction appropriate to how you plan to carry it; a reusable cup is not necessarily a sealed vacuum flask.
